Young Adults – Ages 10 and up
What does R.L. Stine, Jill Murphy, Shel Silverstein, Luisa May Alcott, Mary Shelly, and Christopher Paolini all have in common? They all started writing before they were 18! If you've dreamed of becoming a writer (and perhaps wondered how to get started) or just want to know more about books, then this workshop is for you!
Description:
Uncover some of the secrets behind some of your favorite books. Learn how to decipher mainstream fiction from genre fiction. Study the elements of creative writing, including the basics of characterization, setting, dialogue, and plotting. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the publishing industry and what goes into getting published. All participants are encouraged to interact in the conversation.
Objective:
- Understand genres (Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Romance, Young Adult, Folktale, Poetry, Short Story, Urban lit, fan-fiction, etc.)
- Learn to capture and express the inner muse
- History on literature from Mythology to Contemporary Mainstream
How to write compelling plots, clever dialogue, engaging characters, and satisfying conclusions
- Plotting and drafting a story
Information on the publishing industry (agents, publishing houses, magazines, e-publishing, etc.)
- Elements of basic writing: Grammar and Punctuation
